What is this?

This is an urban fantasy story about a clairvoyant fighting constant burnout, a paladin who doesn't realize he's in a cult, and a lady with a mouth full of shark teeth. They're all fighting to get hold of some kid who may or may not have the power to destroy humanity as they know it. Also, there are vampires. It's funny, spooky, and weird.

The story is co-written by me (Stick) and my partner (Leigh). Once there are chapters to post, they'll be posted weekly. Until then, you can see my progress notes below.

I took a break from writing for a few weeks, which was good for me. While I've spent the better part of two decades trying to buckle down and brute-force my way into finishing things, it's never actually worked. As soon as I start seeing a creative project as work or an obligation, I lose steam and fall down a self-induced spiral of guilt and resentment. This time, the moment I got bored, I put my story on pause to go work on a totally different project that I was excited about. Now that I've gotten bored of the second project, I'm feeling ready and excited to work on my story again. I can't even complain that this method takes me longer, because I work way faster when I'm actively interested in what I'm doing and not fighting impending burnout.

All that to say, I finished a questionnaire for each of the three main characters (Zoe, Tabby, and Zhas) to flesh them out a little. I have vague ideas of how I want the story to be structured, and the next step is to pull together an outline. At the same time, Leigh has kindly agreed to run some play-by-post scenes with me so that I can nail down Zoe's "voice" — she's the character I'm least familiar with, since she's changed a ton since the last time I tried writing this thing. Tabby was originally Leigh's character, and they have a ton of old writing I can use as a reference. Zhas is the biggest fuckhead out of the three and, regrettably, I could write for him in my sleep.

The project has officially started! I'm taking a couple of months to work on a foundation before I start writing the story proper, which so far includes about 13 pages explaining how vampires work. I came up with some interesting bits involving alchemy, an Impossible Geometry dimension, and ghost hunters.

It also includes at least two tables, because of course everything I write requires a reference table. I will eventually post a beautiful bloodlines flowchart to the Ephemera page, but first I'm hustling on to some character studies for the main three. So far I'm mostly just happy to be doing something creative again.
